Netflix Vs Spielberg

Source: Comicbook

By: Megan Peters

It doesn’t take much to prompt conversation on Twitter, and movie fans responded to a heated debate in droves this weekend. Recently, a report went live saying Steven Spielberg is hoping to get Netflix films banned from receiving Oscars, and it seems the streaming service is responding at last.
Taking to Twitter, the official page for Netflix Film posted a brief note to fans that’s seemingly in response to Spielberg and his critiques.

“We love cinema. Here are some things we also love,” the post reads. “Access for people who can't always afford, or live in towns without, theaters. Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time. Giving filmmakers more ways to share art.

“These things are not mutually exclusive.”
This comment surfaced just days after a report by IndieWire suggested Spielberg is eager to suggest a rule change within The Academy of Motion Picture Sciences to make streamed films ineligible for awards.
“Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation,” a spokesperson for Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment said. “He’ll be happy if the others will join [his campaign] when that comes up [at the Academy Board of Governors meeting]. He will see what happens.”
The report was met with some intense scrutiny online as netizens weighed in on the director’s notes. Many felt his comments represented an outdated view on film, but Spielberg is not alone in his concern. According to reports, other Academy representatives feel Netflix needs to adhere to certain standards to be eligible for Oscars moving forward.
“There’s a growing sense that if [Netflix] is going to behave like a studio, there should be some sort of standard,” one Academy governor explained. “The rules were put into effect when no one could conceive of this present or this future. We need a little clarity.”

At this point, no decision has come down on whether The Academy's standards for streamed films will be changed for future seasons, but the debate is raging on online. As sites like Netflix continue to tout more and more critically acclaimed projects, friction between the company and Hollywood's traditional theatrics is unavoidable, but it seems Netflix is sticking to its guns with this big hurdle.

Deadpool Is Now Highest Grossing Movie At the Box Office

Deadpool
Fox’s superhero action-comedy now had a worldwide box office total of nearly $746 million. That puts it ahead of the movie previously at the top of the chart, The Matrix Reloaded, which grossed $742.1 million worldwide.
Domestically, Deadpool is still only the third highest grossing R-rated movie, with $349.5 million, just behind American Sniper in second with #350.1 million. However, Deadpool is still playing in theaters, so there’s a good chance it will overtake American Sniper by the end of its run.

THE NEXT JOKER WOULD LIKELY BE A FEMALE ONE, says Bruno Heller

BY Lucas Siegel

Gotham's Bruno Heller: "We’ve Absolutely Considered The Possibility Of A Female Joker"

SPOILERS Ahead for last night's episode of Gotham, "The Last Laugh!"
Yes, despite his expert protrayal at the hands of Cameron Monaghan, who seemed to take the best of multiple Jokers and put them into the character of Jerome, the young man with the sadistic laugh died last night on Gotham. The character, then, serves to inspire the next attempt - or two or five or ten attempts - at becoming the ultimate villain.
When discussing the death of Jerome with Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, though, we had to ask about the ComicBook.com theory that Barbara Kean could, in fact, become The Joker on the series. After all, Heller has said in the past that The Joker would be inspired by other people, and Barbara worked very closely with Jerome these last few episodes. She even commented to mastermind Theo Galavan, "I don’t know, the kid had a way about him" when he mentioned Jerome's whole modus operandi.
At the end of a phone interview with Heller, I asked about the theory. The writer and producer known for his candid nature gave a still-somehow-surprisingly-candid response: It's completely feasible. Aside from the evidence already on Gotham, and the last three weeks of additional support for the theory about Barbara, there is some comic book support as well. If you think of Gotham as an alternate reality to the main DC Comics world, in another alternate reality, Flashpoint, there was already a female Joker. In that world, Bruce Wayne was killed in the alley, driving his father Thomas to become Batman and his mother Martha to become The Joker. Also, Barbara Kean has historically had some mental instability in the comics, and the son of her and Jim Gordon has gone on to be a sadistic killer in his own right.
Here is Bruno Heller's response to the theory - and even the possibilty of a female Joker - in full:

Four Superhero Movies That Surpassed the Comics

                                                                     By Lucas Siegel

Ah, the comic book adaptation. It’s a fickle beast, one that often underwhelms, sometimes matches, and rarely exceeds the original product. That spotty track record is often due the translation from one medium to another. A book develops characters and the intricacies of plot over hundreds of pages; a movie does the same in usually two hours or less. A comic book movie presents an even more difficult scenario: taking a serialized story, meant to be read over the course of months or even years, and turning it into a cohesive narrative for one sitting.
But moments of greatness exist, and when they shine, they're blinding. When done exceedingly well, comic book movie adaptations can truly surpass their original versions to create an enduring product with a life of its own. Here are a few examples.

Goosebumps Sequel In The Works

 By Jamie Lovett

Photo: Columbia Pictures

Sony Pictures is reportedly already plotting a Goosebumps sequel. While the first Goosebumps movie hasn’t hit theaters yet, The Tracking Board reports that Sony is confident it have a successful new franchise on its hands.
The report claims that Sony is already searching for a writer to pen the sequel, and that stars Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, and Odeya Rush are already contracted to return.
In Goosebumps, upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.
Check out when Goosebumps and other movies are coming out in ComicBook.com's Movie Release Schedule.
